Hello, and thanks for coming by to visit. My Georgia roots run deep, and like any son of the South I thoroughly enjoy good company, delicious food, fine libations, and engaging conversation. These hallmarks of good living are all found in Rise and Shine! A food memoir with more than 100 recipes, my book was inspired by many fine folks. Foremost are my parents and the loved ones who raised me; their passion for fresh, farm-to-table food, and gracious manners, are blessings that guide me to this day. You’ll hear a lot about Mama, Daddy, and my bevvy of aunts, uncles and cousins as you read along with me. Also my circle of entertaining and loving friends helped make this culinary journey a reality; they are peppered throughout Rise and Shine! It is my pleasure to share with you the many stories about our conviviality around the dinner table, whether it is at my home in Savannah, in a bistro on St. Maarten, or gazing out over a New England moonrise on the craggy coast of Maine.
I hope that, after you have met all the charming souls who populate my book, and have read about the special times we’ve shared together breaking bread, you’ll look back on your own life and realize, as I do, that food does indeed equate to love.
Again, thanks for your company, and I wish each of you the very best of joys in cooking, family, and friendship. With sincerest of regards, I am
for RISE AND SHINE!
With seven generations of Georgia heritage to draw upon, Johnathon Scott Barrett has mastered the Southern food memoir in Rise and Shine! The reader can’t help but become charmed with his love of food, family, and friends—all of which are showcased in each and every chapter. It is both a delightful read and a scrumptious cookbook.

Being drawn into the vivid stories told in Barrett’s new memoir is a foregone
conclusion—the cadence, rituals and even the fragrances of Georgia come to life in these pages—but it’s the recipes that will bind you, stitch you into his world with the effectiveness of the best cookbooks. Rise and Shine! is a joy to read, and it’s truly a rare thrill to cook alongside Mama and JB.
